Lisbon, Portugal – Football icon Cristiano Ronaldo has offered a word of caution and encouragement regarding Barcelona’s prodigious talent, Lamine Yamal, urging the public and media to temper expectations surrounding the young Spaniard. Speaking ahead of the UEFA Nations League final, Ronaldo praised Yamal’s burgeoning skills but stressed the importance of allowing him to develop organically.
“Lamine Yamal is doing very well, making the most of his talent,” Ronaldo stated, emphasizing a hands-off approach. “Let the kid grow. Don’t put too much pressure on him—he has all the talent he needs. Just let him develop at his own pace.”
The comments come as Yamal, at just 16 years old, has already burst onto the scene, making his senior debut for Barcelona and Spain and consistently impressing with his dazzling dribbling and attacking prowess. His meteoric rise has led to widespread comparisons, including with the five-time Ballon d’Or winner himself.
Ronaldo, however, brushed off these generational comparisons with a laugh. “It’s always been Cristiano versus someone—it’s nothing new to me,” he remarked. “But we’re from different generations: one is just starting, the other is nearing the end.
Compare Yamal to players like Vitinha, who are closer in age.” He added, “But it’s fine, I’m used to the criticism. In the end, it’s one national team against another. I get it—the media loves to build hype, and it’s part of the game. What matters most to me is that Portugal plays well and wins, especially against what might be the best team in the world.”
This sentiment likely refers to Spain, who Portugal is set to face in the UEFA Nations League final.
Despite Yamal being touted as a leading contender for the 2025 Ballon d’Or by some, Ronaldo appeared to downplay the significance of individual accolades. While not explicitly naming a winner, he suggested the award should go to a player who made a significant impact in the Champions League, rather than focusing on hype.
“Individual awards have lost credibility,” Ronaldo asserted. “I won’t say who should win, but for me, it should be someone who made a big impact in the Champions League. That’s where it counts. Yamal, Dembele, Vitinha—any of them could win.
But honestly, individual awards don’t matter much anymore. I’ve seen too much of what goes on behind the scenes.” This cryptic remark hints at a disillusionment with the voting process for such prestigious awards.

Ronaldo’s paternalistic advice to the football world concerning Yamal highlights a common concern among seasoned veterans for young talents. With Yamal’s exceptional start to his career, the pressure to maintain such a high standard can be immense.
Ronaldo, having navigated decades at the pinnacle of the sport, seems keen to ensure Yamal is afforded the space to mature and thrive without being overwhelmed by premature expectations.
