Operatives of the Nigeria Police Force have arrested former Imo State Governor and Senator Rochas Okorocha at the REIZ Continental Hotel in central Abuja over allegations of criminal conspiracy, forgery and impersonation.
The arrest occurred on the night of Monday, October 12, 2026, bringing to a head a weeks-long standoff between the former governor and police investigators who had been seeking his cooperation in an ongoing criminal investigation.
THE ARREST
According to police sources, Okorocha was arrested after he reportedly evaded repeated invitations to appear at Force Headquarters in Abuja.
The former governor was first invited to report on September 2, 2026. His legal team subsequently requested a rescheduling to September 8, 2026, a date he also failed to honour.
With Okorocha having skipped two separate invitations, the authorities moved to obtain a bench warrant, which gave officers the legal authority to proceed with his arrest rather than continue issuing voluntary invitations.
The arrest at the REIZ Continental Hotel, a high-profile hospitality facility in Abuja, was executed by police operatives who had been tracking the former governor’s movements.
THE ALLEGATIONS: A DISPUTED PRIMARY
The charges against Okorocha stem from a disputed All Progressives Congress (APC) senatorial primary for Imo West Senatorial District.
According to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the APC held its primary on May 18, 2026. The officially submitted results identified Governor Hope Uzodimma as the winner, and his name was forwarded to INEC as the party’s candidate.
However, a different document began circulating online and in political circles, presenting Okorocha as the winner of the same primary.
The disputed document reportedly listed Okorocha as the successful candidate with 150,780 votes, despite the official results showing Uzodimma with 230,464 votes and Okorocha with 1,098 votes.
INEC described the circulating document as a “fraudulent and fictitious All Progressives Congress senatorial party primary report for Imo State dated 18th May, 2026” .
THE PETITION AND THE COURT ORDER
On October 8, 2026, the Resident Electoral Commissioner in Imo State, Chukwuemeka Ibeziako, wrote to the Commissioner of Police in Imo State and the state’s DSS counterpart, urging them to investigate Okorocha and others over the alleged forgery.
The letter warned that the alleged conduct could threaten public order in Imo State.
“I urge you to graciously use your good offices to investigate and neutralise this spurious conduct that has a serious likelihood of causing the breakdown of law and order in Imo State,” the letter stated.
Following the petition, a Magistrate Court in Abuja issued bench warrants for the arrest of Okorocha, former Senator Ifeanyi Araraume, and two others, Timothy Ama Chuks and Amen Okorocha.
The warrants, dated September 9, 2026, were issued in two cases with suit numbers CR/M/JW/084/2026 and CR/M/JW/085/2026, instituted by the Inspector-General of Police.
The court authorised police officers across Nigeria to arrest the four suspects and produce them before Senior Magistrate Court 3 in Jiwa, Abuja .
OKOROCHA’S DENIAL
Before his arrest, Okorocha had publicly denied the existence of any court order against him.
In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary and Special Adviser on Media, Sam Onwuemeodo, the former governor described reports of the arrest warrant as false and politically motivated.
“We want to strongly state, and we stand to be contradicted, that no court, whether that of a Senior Magistrate or High Court, had ordered or issued any bench warrant for the arrest of Okorocha,” the statement read.
Okorocha challenged those behind the report to publish the purported court order within 48 hours or retract the story and tender an apology.
He also pointed to what he described as a glaring inconsistency in the report: the alleged bench warrant was dated September 9, 2026, while the REC’s petition that supposedly triggered it was dated October 8, 2026, meaning the court order allegedly came before the petition.
“This is what you get when people decide to deceive, or to chase shadow,” he said.
The statement also claimed that the story was first circulated by Hon. Ambrose Nwaogwugwu, a media aide to Governor Hope Uzodimma, before being picked up by other media outlets.
A HISTORY OF CONFLICT
The arrest is the latest chapter in a long-running political battle between Okorocha and Governor Hope Uzodimma. Okorocha served as governor of Imo State from 2011 to 2019 and later represented Imo West in the Senate.

His relationship with his successor has been fractious, with both men battling for control of the APC structure in the state. The disputed primary results are the flashpoint. The official results favoured Uzodimma; the document circulating online favoured Okorocha.
INEC has treated the latter as a forgery.
WHAT HAPPENS NEXT
Okorocha is expected to be arraigned before the Senior Magistrate Court in Jiwa, Abuja, in the coming days. The arrest of a former governor and sitting senator is a significant escalation. It
signals that the police are prepared to pursue the case despite Okorocha’s political stature.
Whether the court order that Okorocha’s camp dismissed as non-existent will now be produced in court is the central question. If it is, the burden will shift to Okorocha to explain why he failed to honour police invitations.
ValidViewNetwork reports that Okorocha is in police custody. Further details are expected as the case develops.
