COLOGNE — In what local law enforcement is calling entirely unprecedented territory, Cologne police have launched a formal criminal investigation into suspected sexual harassment following a bizarre street incident involving a remote-controlled humanoid robot.
The late-night encounter unfolded outside a fast-food establishment on a bustling downtown thoroughfare, where a 16-year-old girl was gathered with two female friends. According to investigators, a roughly 1.20-meter-tall (four-foot) red-and-gold robot—eccentrically dressed in a white tank top, sweatpants, sunglasses, and a gold chain—approached the teenager from behind, touched her buttocks, and executed inappropriate thrusting motions.
Livestreamed Stunt
Authorities state that the episode was actively captured on camera and broadcast live across social media platforms. Two young men—identified as the 16-year-old owner of the device from the nearby town of Wegberg, and his 19-year-old companion—are suspected of orchestrating the stunt, providing real-time commentary, and filming the interaction.
Footage circulating online shows the machine being escorted toward pedestrians on the lively street, bumping into individuals, and performing aggressive gestures while onlookers and the operators react.
Novel Legal Challenges
Emergency responders arriving at the scene quickly tracked down the suspects. Upon intercepting the pair, officers discovered the humanoid machine hidden inside the trunk of a Volkswagen sedan. Police promptly seized both the robot and the suspects’ mobile phones as physical evidence.
Cologne police spokesperson Christoph Bermel noted that law enforcement has never encountered a similar case. Investigators are currently working to determine whether the machine’s movements were directly manipulated via remote control in real-time or if the actions were autonomously pre-programmed.
Legal experts point out that the incident underscores emerging regulatory and criminal liability challenges as advanced robotics become increasingly accessible to private consumers. Following the incident, Cologne police issued public warnings via social media, cautioning users against treating the assault as a joke and criticizing inappropriate online commentary that could compound the victim’s distress.
