In a landmark judgment delivered at the Rivers State High Court in Port Harcourt, Justice Augusta Chukwu has acquitted twelve individuals charged with the murder of Police Inspector Christiana Erekere. The accused, who had been detained since the incident on April 25, 2024, were standing trial on 13 counts, including conspiracy and murder. The prosecution alleged that the accused killed Inspector Erekere during a stop-and-search operation at the Taaba Police Division in Khana Local Government Area.
Justice Chukwu ruled that the prosecution’s case was fraught with contradictions and lacked credible evidence directly linking the accused to the officer’s death. A critical autopsy report presented during the trial showed that Inspector Erekere died from an underlying health condition rather than from physical assault as initially claimed. The judge concluded that the prosecution failed to meet the burden of proof beyond reasonable doubt, which is a fundamental principle in criminal justice.
Following the acquittal, the court awarded ₦1 million each to the twelve travellers as compensation for the unlawful detention they endured for eighteen months. Families of the acquitted broke into tears of joy, hailing the ruling as a vindication of justice and due process. Conversely, the family of the late Inspector Erekere expressed deep sorrow and dissatisfaction, condemning the judgment as a miscarriage of justice that denies them closure.
Inspector Christiana Erekere was attached to the Taaba Police Division and was reportedly killed during a disputed altercation on a public road while the accused were en route to Akwa Ibom State for a wedding. The case has drawn significant public attention, sparking debates on police accountability, judicial processes, and the complexities of criminal prosecutions in Nigeria’s law enforcement environment.
The Rivers State Police Command stated it is reviewing the court’s decision and evaluating possible next steps, including an appeal. The verdict highlights the delicate balance between upholding individual rights and ensuring justice for victims of alleged crimes within the Nigerian criminal justice system.
