Respiratory Alert: NiMet Urges Mask Use Amidst Haziness Forecast

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a forecast predicting haziness and cloudiness across the country from Monday to Wednesday, urging caution, particularly for individuals with respiratory issues who are advised to wear masks.

According to NiMet’s weather outlook released in Abuja on Sunday, moderate dust haze with a horizontal visibility range of 2km to 5km is expected over the northern and north-central states during this period.

However, patches of clouds are anticipated in the hazy atmosphere, excluding Benue, Kogi, and Kwara, where they are expected. Additionally, patches of clouds are forecasted over the Inland of the South throughout the forecast period.

NiMet further predicts isolated thunderstorms over parts of Edo, Ondo, Ogun, Lagos, Delta, Rivers, and Bayelsa states during the afternoon and evening hours, with patches of clouds over the coast in the morning.

On Tuesday, moderate dust haze with similar visibility range is expected over the northern and north-central regions, with patches of clouds in a hazy atmosphere except in Kwara, Benue, and Kogi.

In the morning, patches of clouds are expected over the Inland of the South and the Coast, with isolated thunderstorms forecasted later in the day over several states.

For Wednesday, NiMet envisages slight dust haze over the northern region and patches of clouds in a hazy atmosphere over the north-central region, except over parts of Plateau, Kwara, Benue, and Kogi states, where isolated thunderstorms are expected later in the day.

Patches of clouds are also forecasted over the inland of the South and the Coast in the morning, with prospects of isolated thunderstorms over several states later in the day.

NiMet has advised individuals with respiratory issues to wear face masks as a precautionary measure.

It also recommended warm clothing for children and the elderly during the night and emphasized the importance of moisturizing skin and lips.

Additionally, airline operators are urged to obtain updated weather reports and forecasts from NiMet for effective planning in their operations.
