Lawmakers say Nigeria must stop importing defence equipment that local manufacturers can already produce as fresh push begins to enforce indigenous procurement policy.

ABUJA, NIGERIA — August 4, 2026

For decades, Nigeria has spent billions of naira importing military hardware while local defence manufacturers struggled for patronage.

The House of Representatives now says that approach must change. ValidViewNetwork reports that the House Committee on Defence has vowed to champion stricter enforcement of the Federal Government’s local content policy, insisting that the Armed Forces and other government institutions should prioritise Nigerian-made military equipment whenever suitable alternatives are available.

The renewed commitment was announced on Tuesday, August 4, during the unveiling of AEGIS-X 2.0, a light tactical armoured vehicle designed and manufactured by indigenous defence company X-Shield Solutions Company Limited in Abuja.

“Nigeria Must Stop Importing What It Can Build”

Chairman of the House Committee on Defence, Babajimi Benson, represented by his Chief of Staff, Benjamin Ekeyi, said Nigeria could no longer justify spending enormous public funds on imported defence equipment that domestic manufacturers are capable of producing.

According to him, the committee has consistently advocated greater government patronage for indigenous defence companies.

“A couple of years ago, we reviewed documents showing the huge amount being spent on procuring items already being produced by Nigerians. We said then that this must stop,” Ekeyi said on behalf of the committee chairman.

He stressed that strengthening local manufacturers would not only reduce dependence on foreign suppliers but also stimulate industrial growth and create skilled employment opportunities.

Reviving A Presidential Directive

Rep.Benson disclosed that lawmakers intend to revive and strengthen implementation of an existing presidential directive requiring Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), including the military, to procure locally manufactured products whenever they are available.

According to him, imported alternatives should only be considered where local capacity does not yet exist. The lawmaker also referenced the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON) Act, noting that its passage represented only the first phase of broader reforms aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s indigenous defence manufacturing ecosystem.

Locally Built, Battle Ready

The spotlight of Tuesday’s event was AEGIS-X 2.0, a new tactical armoured vehicle developed entirely by Nigerian engineers through X-Shield Solutions Company Limited.

Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the company, Charles Ibanga, described the vehicle as a significant milestone in Nigeria’s pursuit of defence industrialisation and strategic self-reliance.

According to him, the platform was specifically designed to support counterterrorism operations, border security, convoy protection, internal security missions and rapid tactical deployments.

Ibanga said the project demonstrates that Nigerian companies possess the expertise required to manufacture mission-ready military platforms that meet international operational standards.

More Than An Armoured Vehicle

Beyond showcasing a new military platform, the launch reflects a broader ambition to position Nigeria as a regional hub for defence production.

Ibanga argued that sustained collaboration between government, the Armed Forces and private manufacturers could accelerate technology transfer, create highly skilled jobs and reduce Nigeria’s long-standing dependence on foreign defence contractors.

He described AEGIS-X 2.0 as “a symbol of innovation, resilience and national pride.”

Why This Matters

Countries with strong defence industries often enjoy strategic advantages that extend beyond national security. Domestic production reduces dependence on foreign suppliers, shortens procurement timelines, conserves foreign exchange and allows equipment to be tailored to local operational realities.

For Nigeria, where security agencies continue to confront terrorism, banditry, kidnapping and organised crime, local manufacturing could also improve equipment availability during emergencies while supporting industrial development.

The Federal Government has in recent years renewed efforts to strengthen indigenous defence production through policy reforms, legislative backing and partnerships with private manufacturers.

However, industry stakeholders have repeatedly argued that inconsistent implementation of local procurement policies has slowed the growth of Nigerian defence companies despite existing manufacturing capacity.

The House Committee’s latest pledge signals an attempt to bridge that gap.Whether the initiative succeeds will depend less on speeches and product unveilings than on consistent procurement decisions that reward innovation, strengthen local industry and gradually reduce Nigeria’s reliance on imported military hardware.
