Khaled al-Asaad, a renowned Syrian archaeologist, dedicated over 50 years of his life to preserving the ancient city of Palmyra, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Born in 1932 in Palmyra, he studied history at Damascus University and became the city’s head of antiquities in 1963, a position he held until his retirement in 2003. Fluent in Aramaic, he contributed significantly to archaeological research and exhibitions, elevating Palmyra’s global recognition.
In 2015, when ISIS captured Palmyra, al-Asaad refused to leave despite the danger. He hid valuable artifacts to protect them from destruction. After weeks of torture, he steadfastly refused to reveal their locations. ISIS publicly beheaded him in August 2015 at the age of 83, accusing him of “idolatry.” His execution symbolized his unwavering commitment to cultural heritage.
