Ibadan, Oyo State – Following the passing of Oba Akinloye Owolabi Olakulehin, the 43rd Olubadan of Ibadanland, on Monday, July 7, 2025, High Chief Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja is poised to ascend the revered throne. Ladoja, a prominent figure in Ibadan’s traditional hierarchy and former governor of Oyo State, is the current Otun Olubadan, placing him next in line according to Ibadan’s unique succession system.
Oba Olakulehin, who reigned for a significant period, passed away today, leaving a void that will soon be filled by the well-established traditional process.

The Olubadan succession is known for its predictability, operating on a structured ladder involving two ruling lines: the Otun Olubadan (civil line) and the Balogun (military line). Chiefs meticulously ascend through ranks within these lines, ensuring a seamless transfer of power to the most senior eligible chief. High Chief Ladoja holds the highest rank in the civil line, making his ascension highly anticipated.
Born on September 25, 1944, High Chief Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja has a distinguished career spanning both politics and traditional leadership. He served as the Governor of Oyo State from 2003 to 2006, making him a unique candidate as potentially the first Olubadan to have held such a high political office. His deep commitment to preserving Ibadan’s cultural heritage and fostering unity has earned him widespread respect.
Ladoja’s active involvement in recent traditional matters, including representing the late Oba Olakulehin in May 2025 during the suspension of two Mogajis (family heads) for land grabbing, further underscores his significant role within the Olubadan-in-Council.
The succession process will involve confirmation by the Olubadan-in-Council, a body of senior chiefs, followed by approval from the Oyo State Government, currently led by Governor Seyi Makinde. The final step will be a formal coronation ceremony, officially installing the new Olubadan. This structured system has historically ensured stability and minimized disputes in Ibadan’s traditional rulership. If Ladoja ascends, the Balogun line would then produce the next Olubadan after his reign, continuing the alternating pattern.
