Queensland Cattle Farmer Jailed for Life Over Brutal Bogie Triple Murder

​TOWNSVILLE — An Australian cattle farmer will spend the rest of his natural life behind bars after being handed a historic 40-year non-parole sentence for the execution-style murder of three neighbors and the attempted murder of a fourth during a bitter property dispute.

​Darryl Valroy Young, 63, was sentenced on Monday in the Supreme Court in Townsville by Justice Christopher Johnstone, following a grueling four-week trial that gripped regional Queensland. A jury found Young guilty of three counts of murder and one count of attempted murder following an 11–1 majority verdict.

​The catastrophic violence unfolded on August 4, 2022, at the gates of Young’s Shannonvale Station near Bogie. Investigators established that Young had accused his neighbors of rustling his livestock and summoned them to the property boundary under the guise of settling the dispute.

​When Mervyn Schwarz, 71, his wife Maree Schwarz, 59, and Maree’s 35-year-old son Graham Tighe arrived, Young confronted them before retreating to his vehicle to fetch a high-powered rifle. He opened fire on the defenseless family, killing Mervyn, Maree, and Graham instantly.

​A fourth member of the party, Graham’s brother Ross Tighe, was shot in the abdomen but managed to survive, becoming the Crown’s vital eyewitness throughout the protracted legal proceedings.

​In delivering his sentence, Justice Johnstone excoriated Young for his chilling lack of remorse, classifying the crime among the worst categories of criminal conduct in Australian legal history. The judge explicitly noted that Young had gunned down the family “as if you were killing feral animals,” slapping an extra 10 years onto the standard 30-year non-parole baseline.

​The resulting 40-year non-parole period is among the strictest terms ever handed down in Queensland. Because the sentences will run concurrently with a separate 16-year term for the attempted murder of Ross Tighe, Young will not be eligible to walk free until he reaches 99 years of age.

​During emotional sentencing remarks, the court heard seven harrowing victim impact statements detailing the generational trauma inflicted on the surviving relatives. Lucy Tighe, widow of the late Graham Tighe, spoke poignantly of their children—who were just 14 months and three weeks old when their father was murdered—and how they continue to navigate life in his absence.

​Throughout the trial, Young maintained his innocence, testifying that he was not present at the gate when the volley of bullets was fired and vehemently denying any role in the bloodshed. However, overwhelming ballistic evidence and the testimony of a traumatized Ross Tighe dismantled the defense’s narrative.

​Court records revealed that Young was previously jailed for stealing over 100 cattle, an underlying history of agrarian friction that ultimately culminated in one of the darkest chapters in modern rural Australian history. Having remained behind bars since his arrest in 2022, Young was promptly escorted back to custody to begin his life sentence.
