In a significant development set to shape the discourse on Nigerian higher education, the eminent Prof Wande Abimbola, former Vice-Chancellor of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, has been announced as the guest speaker for the widely followed monthly online discourse, Boiling Point Arena, scheduled for Sunday, September 14, 2025, at 8 pm. The 35th episode of the program promises to focus on the critical issues plaguing Nigeria’s universities under the theme: “Nigerian Universities: Tower of Crises, Citadel of Missed Opportunities. Can the Lost Glory be Reclaimed?”

Prof Abimbola, an internationally acclaimed scholar and respected university leader, served as Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ife (now OAU) from 1982 to 1989, a period regarded as a golden era of academic excellence and exemplary leadership within the institution. Currently residing and teaching in several American universities, his wealth of experience and profound understanding of academia position him uniquely to offer pragmatic solutions to the systemic and infrastructural decadence confronting Nigerian tertiary institutions.

The discourse will be chaired by the Olowu of Owu Kingdom, Oba Prof Saka Matemilola, whose keynote address is expected to set the tone for the critical engagement. Dr Ayo Arowojolu, a media professional and public relations strategist, will host the live program.

Boiling Point Arena, which amasses a large online following alongside extensive live radio listenership, will broadcast this special session live through six radio stations across Lagos, Ogun, and Delta states: WASH 94.9FM, Sweet 107.1FM, Roots 97.1FM, Erimbe 94.7FM, Women Radio 91.7FM, and Kruzz 92.9FM, as well as via NSTV on GoTV channel 316.

Known for his scholarly contributions to African languages and cultures and his transformative leadership during his tenure as OAU’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof Abimbola is expected to draw from his experience to challenge the current challenges, identify missed opportunities, and propose innovative ways to restore Nigerian universities to their status as citadels of academic excellence and national pride.
