Ijebu Faces New Era: Acclaimed Surgeon Emerges as Leading Awujale Candidate

Ijebuland is buzzing with anticipation as the revered stool of the Awujale becomes vacant following the recent passing of Oba Sikiru Adetona. Among the prominent figures being considered for this prestigious role, Dr. Adekunle Hassan, an internationally acclaimed ophthalmic surgeon, stands out as a leading contender. Dr. Hassan isn’t just a celebrated medical professional; he is a royal figure whose lineage commands respect. As the Olori Ebi (Head of the Family) of the Fusengbuwa Ruling House, his claim to the throne is deeply rooted in tradition. Dr. Hassan’s educational path showcases his relentless pursuit of knowledge. After attending Ilesa Grammar School and Ijebu Muslim College, he honed his medical skills at the College of Medicine, University of Lagos. His quest for excellence took him across continents, where he earned prestigious fellowships from the Royal College of Surgeons in Glasgow, the Royal College of Ophthalmologists in the UK, and the West African College of Surgeons. His extensive training across Europe, America, the Middle East, and Africa has equipped him with unparalleled expertise in various ophthalmic specialities, including vitreo-retinal surgery, glaucoma, cataract, and ocular plastic surgery.

Revolutionizing Eye Care in Nigeria
Beyond his surgical prowess, Dr. Hassan is recognized as a visionary leader who has fundamentally transformed eye care in Nigeria. He is the founder of the Eye Foundation Hospital, Nigeria’s first private postgraduate training institution for ophthalmology, and the Deseret Community Vision Institute. Through these institutions, he has trained over 100 ophthalmologists and ophthalmic professionals, introducing and popularizing modern ophthalmological practices, including vitreo-retinal surgery, in Nigeria. His innovative Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model has been instrumental in making quality eye care accessible to a broader population, effectively bridging the gap between privileged and underserved communities.

Influence Beyond Medicine
Dr. Hassan’s impact extends far beyond the medical field. He serves on the boards of several national and international organizations, including Access Bank Plc and the International Council of Ophthalmology, where he has played a significant role in shaping policies and advancing healthcare leadership. Currently, he chairs the Ophthalmology Leadership Group for Sub-Saharan Africa, where he champions the “Alliance for Sight” initiative, a crucial effort to combat preventable blindness across the region.

A Legacy of Awards and Philanthropy
His outstanding contributions have earned him numerous accolades, including the distinction of being the first African to receive the International Council of Ophthalmology’s Mark Tso Golden Apple Award for his profound impact on ophthalmic education. With over 100 publications and 30 academic awards, his legacy in medicine is undeniably profound.

Yet, his greatness is not confined to his professional achievements. Oba S.K. Adetona, the late Awujale, recognized Dr. Hassan’s dedicated service to Ijebuland by installing him as the Otunba Obaruwa (Ba’mole) Akile Ijebu. This honor underscores his embodiment of the Omoluabi spirit—a person of integrity, humility, and generosity. A quiet philanthropist, Dr. Hassan has positively impacted countless lives through his community service and leadership.
