Prince Alwaleed bin Khalid bin Talal Al Saud, affectionately known as Saudi Arabia’s “Sleeping Prince,” passed away on Saturday at age 35 after nearly two decades in a coma. The young royal suffered a severe car accident in 2005 while studying at a military college in London, which caused a traumatic brain injury and left him unconscious ever since.
Despite multiple medical recommendations to discontinue life support, his father, Prince Khalid bin Talal, steadfastly refused, holding on to hope and faith that his son might recover. Over the years, the prince remained on life support at King Abdulaziz Medical City in Riyadh, sustained by a ventilator and feeding tube. Though there were occasional small movements such as finger lifts or head turns noted in 2019, these were not signs of regained consciousness.
His prolonged medical ordeal drew widespread sympathy throughout the region and beyond. On social media, messages of support and prayers surged especially on his birthdays, reflecting the public’s emotional connection to his story.
Prince Khalid confirmed his son’s death in a heartfelt post on X (formerly Twitter), quoting a Quranic verse and expressing deep sorrow but submission to God’s will. Funeral prayers are expected to be held in Riyadh.
Prince Alwaleed was the son of Prince Khalid bin Talal and a great-grandson of Saudi Arabia’s founding monarch, King Abdulaziz. His life and long coma became symbolic of enduring hope, family devotion, and faith amidst tragedy.
