ABUJA – Nigeria is in mourning following the passing of football legend Christian Chukwu at the age of 74. President Bola Tinubu has expressed deep condolences to the family, friends, and countless football fans who are grieving the loss of a true national hero.
In a statement released yesterday, President Tinubu joined the nation’s football community in paying tribute to Chukwu, whose remarkable contributions to the sport elevated Nigeria’s standing on the global stage.
“Christian Chukwu was more than a footballer and coach. He was a symbol of excellence and patriotism,” President Tinubu stated. “He brought joy to millions, mentored a generation of footballers, and stood as a pillar of Nigerian brand and sportsmanship on and off the pitch.”
Chukwu, affectionately known as “Chairman” for his commanding presence, captained the Green Eagles to their historic 1980 Africa Cup of Nations victory. He later served as the coach of the Super Eagles, guiding them to a bronze medal at the 2004 Africa Cup of Nations.
His club career was equally illustrious, spent entirely with Enugu Rangers, where he secured numerous national titles and led the club to continental glory with their 1977 African Cup Winners’ Cup triumph.
President Tinubu eulogized Chukwu’s “trailblazing career defined by passion, discipline, and commitment to national pride.”
“His legacies will continue to live on in the trophies he won, the lives he touched, and the exciting moments he provided to football fans and spectators on the field and in the technical area,” the President added. “We are forever grateful for his contributions to the sport we all love, and we will always remember him with great respect and admiration.”
President Tinubu offered prayers for the repose of Chukwu’s soul and extended comfort to his family, urging them to find solace in his enduring legacy.
Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President (Information & Strategy), released the statement on April 12, 2025. The nation now reflects on the indelible mark left by a true football giant.
