According to Livinus Yilzoom, the Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Yobe, the victims were pedestrians waiting to cross the road after the market closed. The driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle due to excessive speed while attempting to avoid hitting another pedestrian.
Emergency responders from the FRSC’s Dogon Kuka Unit Command arrived promptly, evacuating victims to Damagum General Hospital for medical attention. Preliminary investigations identified speed limit violations and loss of control as the primary causes of the crash.
Eyewitnesses have raised concerns about the proximity of markets to highways, which they believe increases the risk of such accidents. Authorities are urged to address these safety concerns to prevent future tragedies.
