The Anambra State Police Command has arrested a 24-year-old woman, Somtochukwu Nwafor, over the gruesome murder of a pregnant nurse in Ogbunike, Oyi Local Government Area. The victim’s mutilated body was found dumped in a soakaway pit, sparking public outrage.
Police spokesperson Tochukwu Ikenga stated that the arrest on July 25 followed swift collaboration between detectives and Umueri village residents. Preliminary investigations revealed that Somtochukwu lured the nurse—on her boyfriend’s instruction—under the guise of requiring home treatment. The victim was then kidnapped, murdered, and dismembered.
During police interrogation, Somtochukwu confessed to assisting her boyfriend, Chiemerie Obika Elobisi—who remains at large—in cleaning the crime scene. She further admitted that body parts were sold to native doctors for ritual purposes.
Acting on Somtochukwu’s information, detectives raided the shrine of a suspected native doctor, Nwafor Chibunna Ofornwatadile, at Itima Amawa Village, recovering human body parts hidden in nylon bags.
The Anambra State Commissioner of Police, Ikioye Orutugu, strongly condemned the act, calling it “inhumane, criminal, and an affront to public morality and the sanctity of life.” He appealed to the public to provide information that could assist the ongoing investigation, assuring that informants’ identities will remain confidential.
Meanwhile, a manhunt has been launched for the prime suspect and others believed to be involved in the atrocity.
