Police Detain Woman in Ile-Ife After Vigilante Dies Suddenly Post-Intimacy

​The Osun State Police Command has taken a woman into custody following the sudden death of a local vigilante operative, Sunday—widely known as Apetu—who passed away shortly after a sexual encounter in Ile-Ife.

​The incident, which unfolded around 2:30 p.m. in the Odi-Olokun area of the ancient city, has sparked widespread curiosity and anxiety across the community. According to a preliminary situation report from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), the victim was later tracked or found moving onto Ooni Ilare Street exhibiting signs of acute physical distress.

​A viral video captured at the scene showed the operative gasping, screaming, and pleading with the woman to provide him with urine while in profound agony. He died shortly after, and his remains have since been deposited at the morgue of the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospitals Complex (OAUTHC), Ile-Ife.

​In the wake of the tragedy, social media platforms and local neighborhoods have been flooded with conflicting narratives. A section of local residents quickly attributed the sudden fatality to “thunderbolt”—an esoteric traditional belief alleging that a compromised individual can inflict fatal consequences on a partner during intimacy.

​A senior official within the Osun State Police Command confirmed the arrest of the woman, noting that she is currently being held at the Moore Police Division. Authorities clarified that her detention is a standard procedural step to facilitate a thorough inquiry rather than an automatic presumption of guilt.
