OSOGBO — Operatives of the Nigeria Police Force have apprehended controversial Islamic comparator and online commentator, Jamiu Adegunwa, following his failure to appear before a Federal High Court sitting in Osogbo, Osun State.
Adegunwa’s arrest in Ibadan, Oyo State, stems from an ongoing criminal trial regarding alleged defamatory, offensive, and menacing online publications targeting the President of the Academy of Islamic Propagation (ACADIP), Mallam Yusuf Adepoju, and his family.
Evading Court Mandate
According to court documents obtained from the Federal High Court, Osogbo Judicial Division, Adegunwa is facing a one-count criminal charge in suit FHC/OS/86C/2025. The bench warrant was executed after the defendant repeatedly failed to present himself for arraignment, prompting law enforcement to track him down to his location in neighboring Oyo State.
The prosecution, spearheaded by Dr. J.O. Famuyini, Head of Legal and Prosecution at the Nigeria Police Force, Zone 11 Headquarters in Osogbo, stated that subsequent court processes and the defendant’s evasive actions compelled the police to secure his appearance by force.
Details of the Cybercrime Charge
The charge sheet details a long-standing digital feud between the two religious figures. The prosecution alleges that between July 4 and July 31, 2022, Adegunwa knowingly and intentionally transmitted malicious verbal and photographic messages via his online social media platform, Al Madrasatu Wahabiyah.
The police stated that these digital broadcasts were false, menacing, and weaponized to orchestrate:
- Public insult and hatred against Mallam Yusuf Adepoju.
- Threatening and anxiety-inducing exposure for Adepoju’s immediate family.
- Social enmity, ill-will, and personal danger within the community.
The alleged offenses contravene Section 24(1)(a) and (b), alongside Section 24(2)(a) of Nigeria’s Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act, 2015.
Failed N500 Million Counter-Suit
Before his eventual arrest, Adegunwa attempted to halt the police trajectory by instituting a fundamental human rights civil action against the Inspector-General of Police and the former Assistant Inspector-General (AIG) in charge of Zone 11.
In that civil suit, Adegunwa demanded N500 million in damages, alleging wrongful harassment. However, the Federal High Court dismissed the claim and ruled entirely in favor of the Nigeria Police Force, clearing the path for his current criminal prosecution.
The deep-seated friction between Adegunwa and the ACADIP leadership traces back several years, punctuated by mutual petitions, internet commentary warfare, and a previous controversial 2022 legal incident in Lagos where a police officer was detained for allegedly filing unauthorized charges against Adepoju.
