State Orders Indefinite Closure of All Schools Over Disease Outbreak

The Plateau State Government has ordered the immediate temporary closure of all public and private primary and secondary schools across the state following suspected cases of diphtheria in four Local Government Areas.

The directive, which takes effect from Monday, September 7, 2026, applies to all schools, including those that have already resumed academic activities.

A Precautionary Measure

ValidViewNetwork gathered that the Plateau State Government has ordered the immediate temporary closure of all public and private primary and secondary schools across the state following suspected cases of diphtheria in four Local Government Areas.

The directive, which takes effect from Monday, September 7, 2026, applies to all basic education institutions, including schools that have already resumed academic activities. Schools will remain closed until further notice.

The Affected Areas

The government gave the order in a statement issued on Saturday, September 5, 2026, signed by the Commissioner for Information and Communication, Rt. Hon. Joyce Lohya Ramnap, mni.

According to the statement, suspected cases of diphtheria have been recorded in Jos North, Wase, Jos South and Bassa Local Government Areas.

Why Schools Are Closing

The directive was issued under the leadership of Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang as part of efforts to curb the spread of the infection.

The government said the closure was intended to limit exposure among children while health workers conduct contact tracing, vaccination mop-up and decontamination in the identified areas.

Health authorities in Plateau confirmed that suspected cases have been reported in the affected LGAs in recent weeks, prompting the Ministry of Health to activate surveillance and response teams in the affected communities.

A Call for Compliance

The government urged school proprietors, administrators and teachers to comply with the directive and asked parents and guardians to keep pupils and students at home throughout the closure.

“Further information on the resumption of academic activities will be communicated to the public in due course,” the statement said.

The Diphtheria Threat

Diphtheria spreads through direct contact or respiratory droplets and is common in crowded settings such as schools.

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control has, in the past, advised states to intensify vaccination, public sensitisation and early case detection to prevent wider transmission.

Health officials are urging parents to ensure that children complete their routine immunisations, practise hand hygiene and report symptoms such as fever, sore throat and difficulty breathing to the nearest health facility immediately.
