Governor Douye Diri has officially sworn in Dr. Peter Pereotubo Akpe as the new Deputy Governor of Bayelsa State, marking a significant transition in the state’s leadership. The historic ceremony, held on Wednesday, February 25, 2026, at the Executive Chambers of Government House in Yenagoa, follows the sudden passing of the former Deputy Governor, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, in December 2025.
A Legacy of Competence and Continuity
The appointment of Dr. Akpe, who until his elevation served as the Chief of Staff to the Governor, was described by Diri as a move guided by the need for continuity, competence, and character. Dr. Akpe, a seasoned administrator with a PhD and an ordained clergyman in the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), was chosen following a period of prayerful consultation.

During the inauguration, Governor Diri noted that the wide acceptance of Akpe’s nomination reflects his “distinguished academic excellence and tested administrative acumen.” In a lighthearted yet symbolic moment, the Governor remarked that their matching outfits at the ceremony were “divinely instructive,” signaling a unified front for the remainder of their administration.
Parliamentary Tradition and Legal Protocols
The Bayelsa State House of Assembly, led by Speaker Rt. Hon. Abraham Ingobere, provided swift confirmation for the nomination on Tuesday. In recognition of Dr. Akpe’s previous service as a Majority Leader in the House, lawmakers invited him to “take a bow and leave,” adhering to longstanding parliamentary tradition.
The formal oath of office and allegiance was administered by the Chief Judge of Bayelsa State, Honourable Justice Matilda Abrakasa Ayemieye.

Strengthening the Civil Service
The day also witnessed the swearing-in of additional key officials to bolster the “Government of Assured Prosperity”:
- Ministry of Women, Children Affairs, Empowerment and Social Development: Mrs. Joanna Gigi was sworn in as the new Commissioner, filling the vacancy created by the late Mrs. Elizabeth Bidei.
- Permanent Secretaries: Eighteen newly appointed Permanent Secretaries took their oaths to enhance service delivery across various state ministries.
Looking Forward
Governor Diri urged the new appointees to serve with loyalty and integrity, emphasizing that sound governance is the bedrock of progress. He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to delivering legacy projects that will benefit all Bayelsans, calling for continued public support as they work toward the state’s betterment.
