ABUJA – The internal turmoil within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) escalated dramatically today as the faction loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, announced the indefinite postponement of its National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting. This development comes amidst heightened tensions, including a looming threat by the FCTA, under Wike’s purview, to seize the party’s national secretariat over alleged unpaid ground rents.
The much-anticipated NEC meeting, which had already seen multiple postponements, was previously slated for May 27, 2025. Sources within the Wike camp indicated that the decision to indefinitely suspend the gathering was a tactical move, though no official reason has been provided. However, the timing is particularly poignant, as the FCTA has confirmed plans to begin enforcing revocation orders on properties, including the PDP headquarters, as early as Monday, May 26, 2025.
The FCTA claims the party owes decades of ground rent, amounting to ₦6.9 billion. This potential eviction could force the PDP to relocate or suspend its NEC meeting, further deepening its already fractious leadership crisis. Critics within the PDP view Wike’s actions regarding the secretariat as a deliberate political maneuver, considering his open campaign for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2023 elections despite remaining a PDP member and his current cabinet position under President Bola Tinubu.
The PDP’s National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, tersely stated, “We will deal with it on Monday,” signaling a possible legal or political counter-move. Insiders suggest the FCTA’s timing, on the eve of a crucial leadership meeting, raises significant red flags. The NEC meeting was expected to deliberate on vital issues, including party restructuring, zoning arrangements for the 2027 general elections, and the contentious role of figures like Wike within the party.
This latest postponement adds another layer of complexity to the PDP’s ongoing struggles. The party has been grappling with internal divisions, mass defections, and legal battles, notably concerning the position of its National Secretary. While various blocs, including the PDP Governors’ Forum and the Atiku Abubakar loyalists, have been strategizing for the NEC meeting, Wike’s recent actions, including his surprise appearance at a PDP Governors’ meeting earlier this month, have sparked speculation about potential reconciliations or further realignments.
Observers warn that the situation could further escalate tensions between the main opposition party and the APC-led federal government as the 2027 electoral cycle approaches. The indefinite postponement of the NEC meeting not only underscores the deep-seated divisions within the PDP but also highlights the external pressures and political maneuvering that continue to plague the party.
