Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has boldly affirmed that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) remains vibrant and poised to stun its detractors. Speaking at the PDP Southwest Stakeholders Meeting in Abeokuta, Ogun State on Friday, January 23, 2026, he dismissed narratives of the party’s demise.
Event Highlights
The gathering drew key PDP figures from across the Southwest zone, including Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, Ondo, Osun, and Ekiti states. Attendees featured former Osun Governor Olagunsoye Oyinlola, PDP Southwest Chairman Engr. Kamorudeen Ajisafe, Ogun State’s 2023 gubernatorial candidate Hon. Ladi Adebutu, Oyo State House of Assembly Speaker Debo Ogundoyin, PDP National Secretary Taofeek Arapaja, and several House of Representatives members from Oyo.

A significant boost came from fresh defections into the PDP, with groups from the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ijebu North Local Government Area, led by Hon. Akorede Fowosere, and members of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) from Ogun East Senatorial District, led by Alhaji Wasiu Ajirotutu. Makinde highlighted this influx and the strong turnout as proof against claims of PDP’s weakness.

Makinde’s Key Message
“I can assure you that the PDP is well and alive. Whoever thinks otherwise will be surprised beyond their imagination,” Makinde declared, urging unity and grassroots action. He charged leaders to fortify party structures at the community, ward, and local government levels, while encouraging voter registration and Permanent Voter Card (PVC) collection to drive change.

This comes amid PDP’s ongoing efforts to rebuild ahead of the 2027 elections, with Makinde emphasizing sustained momentum in Oyo and the Southwest zone.
