“Patch-Patch Works All The Way”: Residents Cry Out as Sango Bridge Road Projects Remain Abandoned, Gridlock Worsens

Motorists, pedestrians, and residents of Sango in Ogun State have condemned the neglect of construction works under and around the Sango Bridge, describing the situation as a daily nightmare.

With the Joju end of the road abandoned for weeks, the Sango underpass blocked, and traffic at a standstill, many are questioning Governor Dapo Abiodun’s commitment to fixing the axis ahead of the 2027 elections.

A Viral Video Sparks Fresh Outrage

A video circulating on social media has reignited public anger over the deplorable state of roads around the Sango Bridge in Ogun State.

The footage, shared by Objectv Media, shows the dilapidated condition of the road, with the caption: “Shameful! Dear Gov. Dapo Abiodun, This Is By The Sango Bridge. Check On This Your Construction Gang. It’s All Been Patch-Patch Works All The Way” .

The video, which has gone viral, has drawn widespread condemnation from residents and motorists who have long complained about the neglect of the critical infrastructure linking Ogun State to Lagos.

A History of Broken Promises

The Sango Bridge axis has been a source of frustration for years. In June 2026, The Guardian reported that motorists, pedestrians and residents of Sango in Ado-Odo/Ota Local Council had condemned the neglect of construction works under and around the Sango Bridge roads.

A visit to the area revealed that the long-overdue construction work from the Joju end towards the bridge, inward Sango from Ifo, which commenced a few months ago, had been abandoned and rendered impassable.

Traders have taken over the abandoned road, while commercial tricycle operators and motorcyclists have turned the area where the barricade was positioned into a mini park.

In addition, a section of the road under the bridge linking motorists travelling from the Ijoko Road axis to the Idiroko Expressway was also blocked, compounding traffic problems in the area.

The situation has been aggravated by the ongoing construction work at the Sango Bus Stop, opposite the popular Sango Market, which residents said has also been abandoned for about six weeks.

A Daily Nightmare for Commuters

The abandoned projects have turned Sango into a nightmare for commuters. A disgruntled motorist, Olalekan Joseph, described the development as sad.

“Sango is gradually becoming a no-go area and the shame of a state. Despite sharing borders with Lagos State, it is a sharp contrast in everything. It is only in Ogun State that the government or contractors will block a major road on the excuse of construction and block alternative routes,” Joseph said.

He recounted his ordeal during a recent flood: “When I saw the traffic gridlock at the Joju Bus Stop due to the level of the water last Sunday, I asked if the under bridge route could bail me out, but I was alarmed that it was blocked. The best option at that moment was to divert through the Joju road to link up with the Idiroko expressway, but the road was also blocked. I ended up passing through the Geepee-Allover Polytechnic route, which was a very long route.”

“Though we escaped the ‘mini river’ and traffic gridlock that had built up for hours, it took us longer than we expected, burning fuel for a problem that is amendable. Governor Dapo Abiodun should use his remaining few months in office to make an impact by focusing on these roads, enough of politicking,” Joseph added.

A Call for Action

Kayode Olawoye, Convener of Make Ogun State Great Again (MOGA), condemned the state of the road, describing it as a worrisome development.

“Every development in any community depends on the road. When roads have problems, everything in the community goes down. There is a Chinese proverb, which says to put people out of poverty, give them good roads. When roads are not in good shape, when roads become death traps, and when the section of a busy axis like Sango is abandoned, it is the people who suffer,” Olawoye said.

A Pattern of Neglect

The Sango Bridge crisis is part of a broader pattern of infrastructure neglect in Ogun State.

In October 2025, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and residents protested the deplorable state of the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway after the Minister of Works and Housing, failed to fulfill a promise to commence palliative work on the road.

During the protest, the NLC declared the Minister a “persona non grata” in Ogun State.

“We don’t want to see him, he lied to us, he fooled us,” said the NLC Chairman in the state.

Despite the protests and promises of action, the situation at Sango remains dire.

A Lesson for Nigerian Youths

This is not just a story about bad roads. It is a story about accountability. The same politicians who promise to fix roads while commissioning “patch-patch” works will never allow their own children to endure the nightmare of Sango Bridge.

Their children are safely tucked away in comfortable homes or abroad, insulated from the daily struggles of ordinary Nigerians.

For young Nigerians, the lesson is clear: do not be deceived by political promises.
