The age-old debate over body art within the Christian faith has been set ablaze once more, following a provocative stance by popular cleric Pastor Kingsley Okonkwo. In a recent live broadcast that has since gone viral, the founder of David’s Christian Centre challenged traditional taboos, asserting that the concept of tattooing is not only permissible but possesses a divine precedent.
The Biblical Argument: Isaiah and Revelation
Okonkwo’s argument hinges on a literal and symbolic re-interpretation of specific scriptures. He primarily pointed to Isaiah 49:16, where the text states: “See, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands.” To Okonkwo, this “indelible imprinting” is essentially a divine tattoo. “God himself has tattooed you. Christ himself has tattooed you,” he told his audience, suggesting that the act of marking the skin for significant meaning aligns with God’s own nature of remembrance.
The pastor also drew from the Book of Revelation, specifically referencing descriptions of Jesus returning with inscriptions on his robe and thigh. By citing these passages, Okonkwo aims to dismantle the long-standing stigma that tattoos are inherently “un-Christian” or demonic.
Challenging the Levitical Law
For decades, the primary weapon against body art in the Church has been Leviticus 19:28, which forbids “cuttings in your flesh for the dead” and “printing marks.” However, Pastor Okonkwo dismissed the modern application of this verse, labeling it a misinterpretation of ancient ceremonial laws that do not apply to the modern believer under grace.
Addressing critics who might question his doctrinal shifts, the cleric remained defiant. Citing his decades of ministry and maturity in the faith, he emphasized that he would not teach any concept he hadn’t thoroughly researched or understood. He urged believers to stand firm in their convictions rather than bowing to “public opinion” or traditionalism.
