In a harrowing case that shook a community in Atan, Ogun State, a family’s trust was shattered when their trusted neighbour and spiritual mentor, Pastor Oluwole Jonathan of Christ Apostolic Church, Land of Mercy, was found guilty of defiling their 12-year-old daughter. The girl, known as Blessing to protect her identity, was sent home from school for being unable to pay a ₦1,500 fee for a textbook. What followed was a chain of betrayal, trauma, and legal battle that ended with the pastor’s 21-year imprisonment.
Two and a half years ago, Blessing was invited by Pastor Jonathan to rest at his apartment while waiting for her parents, unaware of the sinister intentions that awaited her. The pastor drugged her, and after she fell unconscious, he sexually assaulted her, threatening she would die if she disclosed the abuse. The trauma culminated in her becoming a mother at just 13 years old.
Her family, initially unaware of the pregnancy and suffering stigma from their community, eventually sought help. DNA tests confirmed the pastor was the father of the child, corroborating the girl’s painful testimony. The case, supported pro bono by the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) and backed by Spring Centre’s aid, culminated in the High Court of Ilaro sentencing Pastor Jonathan in January 2025.
Beyond the courtroom, Blessing’s ordeal continues. Her distress manifests in troubling behavioral changes, including unexplained absences from school and auditory hallucinations urging her to flee. The family relocated to Ifo in a bid to escape the trauma and community stigma, enrolling her in a tailoring workshop closer to home under parental care.
This tragic story highlights the enduring scars of sexual violence and the urgent need for stronger protections for children. The senate’s proposed life sentence for defilement cases offers a hopeful path towards deterring such abuses and protecting vulnerable minors in Nigeria.
