The most dangerous place on an aircraft is supposed to be the one with the locked door. On Wednesday, September 30, 2026, that door became the front line of a mid-air emergency.
Shota Musaev, a 47-year-old Georgian Jewish dentist, was a passenger on FlyDubai flight FZ1073 from Dubai to Tel Aviv.
ValidViewNetwork reports that the captain was allegedly knifed at 34,000 feet by his co-pilot as he tried to protect the controls.
INSIDE THE COCKPIT FIGHT
Musaev told reporters he realised it was a terrorist attack and joined the passengers who rushed ahead of him into the cockpit to pull the attacker out.
Musaev helped restrain the co-pilot using headphone cables and other materials on board. The dentist said the man put up little resistance once subdued. He repeatedly begged to be killed.
THE CAPTAIN’S PLEA
The captain also pleaded with Musaev for help, saying he did not want to die there. The dentist, who treated the wounded pilot, said he was losing a lot of blood.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu named the captain as Indian national Smit Machchhar, who, though seriously injured, opened the cockpit door so others could overpower the attacker.
THE DIVERSION
The flight diverted to Tabuk, Saudi Arabia. FlyDubai described an “altercation” in the flight deck and said crew on the flight secured the aircraft and landed it safely.
The aircraft carried 174 people.
WHAT WE DO NOT YET KNOW
Netanyahu said the co-pilot is an Omani national, arrested and questioned in Saudi Arabia. Israeli officials’ initial assessment is that he likely acted alone. The motive remains under formal investigation. Nothing has been proved, and the suspect’s account has not been heard.
For Musaev, the meaning was larger than the cabin. He said preventing the attack meant the world had been saved a war.
