Panic as Five Bodies Found Along Lagos Riverbank Amid Surge in Cult Violence

At least five bodies were recovered along the riverbank in the Oreta area of the Igbogbo community in Ikorodu, Lagos State on Wednesday. This grim discovery follows the brutal killing of another man in Bayeku on Tuesday. Both communities are located within the Ikorodu area, which has seen a significant rise in cult-related violence.

Residents in the affected areas have linked these violent incidents to the ongoing surge in cult clashes across Lagos State. The state police have responded by redeploying some divisional heads to curb the violence. While some community members believe the Bayeku killing to be unrelated to cultism—suggesting possible land grabbing as the motive—the severity of the brutality, including severed wrist and leg of the victim, has heightened tensions.

At Oreta, police operatives were dispatched to assess the situation after the discovery of five corpses by the riverbank. Despite circulating rumors that the river could have brought the bodies to shore, residents and witnesses refuted this, emphasizing that the cause of death remains unknown and under investigation.

A distressing video shared by a known channel exposing cult activities showed some of the victims lying lifeless by the riverside, with visible bloodstains, underscoring the brutality of the violence. The groups suspected in these cult-related attacks include rival factions like the Eiye (ACN) and Aye (NBM), who have been markedly active in the Ikorodu area.

Local government response has been swift. The Executive Chairman of Igbogbo/Baiyeku Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Hammed Aroyewun, condemned the attacks, describing them as painful and unacceptable affronts to community peace. Aroyewun, alongside security officials and members of the Joint Task Force, visited the scenes and assured residents of intensified security measures and collaboration with security agencies to apprehend the perpetrators and restore peace.

This recent tragedy adds to a wave of cult-related violence in Lagos, including a deadly clash during a festival on Lagos Island earlier in the week where three suspected cultists were killed. The police have yet to release detailed statements on these incidents but continue investigations amid community fears and calls for justice and peace.

The situation in Ikorodu remains tense as residents grapple with the rising violence linked to cult clashes and land disputes, reflecting deeper security challenges faced by Lagos State.
