Ibadan, Oyo State – In a significant move to bolster food security and stimulate economic growth, the Oyo State Government has launched a comprehensive capacity-building program targeting 1,950 farmers across all 33 local government areas of the state. The initiative aims to equip farmers with modern techniques and sustainable practices across a range of agricultural enterprises.




The Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, Barrister Olasunkanmi Olaleye, officially inaugurated the training program in Ibadan on Wednesday. Represented by the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Mrs. Abosede Owoeye, the Commissioner emphasized the government’s commitment to creating a thriving agricultural ecosystem that enhances food production throughout Nigeria.
Investing in the Future of Agriculture
Barrister Olaleye highlighted the Seyi Makinde administration’s dedication to investing in the state’s agricultural future through diverse training opportunities for farmers. He acknowledged the vital role farmers play in ensuring food security and driving economic prosperity, stating that the government recognizes their importance in the state’s overall development strategy.
Comprehensive Training Modules
The training program is structured to cover a wide array of agricultural practices, ensuring that farmers gain expertise in various high-demand areas. The specific training modules include:
- Pasture Management and Artificial Insemination: 660 farmers will be trained in pasture establishment, management, conservation techniques, and artificial insemination to improve livestock production.
- Climate-Smart Agriculture: 300 farmers will focus on climate-smart agriculture, emphasizing high-value crop production and effective weed management strategies to enhance yields while minimizing environmental impact.
- Beekeeping Practices: 140 young farmers will receive specialized training in beekeeping practices, tapping into the potential of honey production and its associated economic benefits.
- Shea Butter Production: 100 participants will learn advanced shea butter production techniques, adding value to local resources and creating opportunities for income generation.
- Locust Bean Processing: 90 participants will be trained in locust bean processing methods, promoting the utilization of indigenous crops and enhancing their market value.
- Mushroom Cultivation: 660 youths, women, and retirees will receive specialized training in mushroom cultivation across all zones in the state, fostering entrepreneurship and diversifying income streams.
Expert-Led Training
The Oyo State Government has engaged a team of expert resource persons, including scholars from the University of Ibadan, to deliver a comprehensive and enriching learning experience. The team includes notable experts such as Prof. Olusola Olorunnisomo, Dr. Adewunmi Adesina, Mr. Tunmise Olagbaju, and bee specialist Mr. Kola Ajao.
Barrister Olaleye urged all participants to fully utilize the training opportunity, underscoring the government’s commitment to providing the resources and expertise necessary for their success. This initiative is expected to significantly boost agricultural productivity, improve livelihoods, and ensure food security across Oyo State.
