The Oyo State Rule of Law Enforcement Authority (OYRLEA) has commenced a robust crackdown on street trading and open grazing violations across the state, with operations intensifying in Ibadan. Led by the Chairperson of OYRLEA, Hon. Justice Aderonke Aderemi (rtd.), alongside DCP Francis Ojomo (rtd.), Chairman of the Environmental Task Force, enforcement teams conducted raids on Tuesday targeting illegal street traders at Bodija Market. Mini stalls, mobile counters, and goods displayed along the roadways were removed during this operation.
The campaign, which began with sensitization efforts and a flag-off event at Bodija Market earlier this year in January, is now transitioning into full enforcement to ensure compliance with existing laws. Justice Aderemi emphasized the state government’s readiness to prosecute violators promptly, underlining OYRLEA’s commitment to enforcing environmental, sanitation, and anti-open grazing regulations.
In addition to street trading, several livestock including three rams and a cow were impounded at Unique Estate, Oluyole, following complaints from residents. Owners were given a seven-day ultimatum to reclaim their animals or face forfeiture, with an option to pay fines instead.
Moreover, residents of Abidiodan in Lagelu Local Government Area have been issued a seven-day ultimatum to evacuate illegal shanties on road setbacks, which have reportedly become hideouts for criminal activities.
The enforcement team included personnel from Operation Burst, the Environmental Task Force, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, and the Amotekun security corps, working collaboratively to restore order and uphold the rule of law within the state.
This strong administrative action by Oyo State underlines a concerted effort to maintain public safety, environmental health, and orderly commerce in the region. The government’s decisive measures aim to curb illegal practices that have long disrupted social and economic life in Ibadan and other parts of Oyo State.
