In a decisive victory for local security, the Oyo State Police Command, bolstered by grassroots hunters, successfully repelled a planned assault on Elebe village in the Aleniboro area of Oke-Ogun. The confrontation, which occurred under the cover of night, resulted in the deaths of two suspected bandits and the dispersal of several others.
The breakthrough began when a vigilant citizen alerted the Tede Divisional Police Office to the presence of a 10-man armed gang hiding within a farm settlement. Intelligence suggested the group was plotting a violent raid on the community. Armed with AK-47 rifles, single-barrel guns, and locally fabricated pistols, the suspects were reportedly overheard discussing their intentions to strike the village.
Upon receiving the report, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) coordinated with Commissioner of Police Femi Haruna, who immediately deployed additional operational resources to the scene.
A Unified Front
The operation saw a seamless collaboration between formal police units and the Agbekoya, a local hunters’ association known for their deep knowledge of the terrain. As the joint security team approached the bandits’ hideout, the criminals opened fire, initiating a fierce gun battle.
The security forces ultimately overpowered the gang with superior firepower. While two suspects were neutralized during the exchange, the remaining eight managed to flee into the dense bush, many believed to be nursing gunshot wounds.
Evidence Recovered
Following the shootout, a reinforcement patrol conducted a forensic sweep of the area. Items recovered from the scene include:
- One makeshift pistol.
- Multiple live and spent cartridges (including 7.62mm AK-47 shells).
- Quantities of suspected Indian hemp.
- Two Tecno mobile phones.
- A bottle containing a suspicious herbal mixture.
Ongoing Security Measures
The State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Olayinka Ayanlade, confirmed the incident in a statement released in Ibadan. He emphasized that the area has been heavily secured, with intensive surveillance and search operations ongoing to track down the fleeing suspects.
Residents of the Aleniboro region are encouraged to remain vigilant and report any individuals seeking treatment for unexplained gunshot wounds to the nearest authorities.
