The Oyo State Government has reiterated its commitment to demolishing illegal structures erected around schools in the state.Hon. Justice Aderonke Aderemi (rtd.), Chairperson of the Oyo State Rule of Law Enforcement Authority (OYRLEA), affirmed this stance during an inspection in the Jemibewon area of Sabo, Ibadan.
Aderemi stressed the government’s dedication to environmental sanitation and maintaining law and order within the society.
Speaking after the visit, Aderemi stated that the government will proceed with the demolitions despite any complaints. The inspection followed a petition submitted to OYRLEA on February 17, 2025, which highlighted the presence of shanties around St. Gabriel School in the Jemibewon area.
Justice Aderemi referenced Governor Seyi Makinde’s directive from October 24, 2023, mandating the removal of shanties and structures around schools, emphasizing that this directive must be upheld through the rule of law.
“Letters have been sent out twice to the occupants and owners of these illegal structures,” Aderemi stated. “Our officers have also met with the ‘Seriki n Sabo’ to discuss the matter with residents, and an ultimatum to vacate the area was issued.”
Following appeals, the intervention and demolition have been delayed until Wednesday, March 19, 2025.
