The Oyo State Government has officially announced the movement schedule of the revered Oloolu Masquerade, a significant cultural figure in Ibadan’s heritage, to take place from Monday, July 28, to Thursday, July 31, 2025.
According to Dr. Wasiu Olatunbosun, the Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Oloolu is regarded as one of the most important Egungun (masquerades) in Ibadan, representing a deep-rooted tradition in the city’s history. The Commissioner emphasized the spiritual nature of Oloolu’s procession, noting that, unlike other masquerades, Oloolu’s route is not predetermined but is guided by spiritual leaders throughout the festival.
The procession is expected to visit key locations, including Aafin Olubadan, Beere, Oje, Idi Arere, Gate, Agbeni, Orita Merin, Oja-Oba, Ayeye, Oranyan, Oke Aremo, Agugu, and Ore Meji, among others.
In line with longstanding customs, the Oloolu Masquerade is traditionally forbidden to be seen by women, except for those born as triplets, who are believed to receive unique blessings during the festival. The government has therefore appealed to residents, particularly women, to respect these cultural practices and cooperate with local authorities as the masquerade moves through Ibadan.
Dr. Olatunbosun expressed appreciation for the public’s continued support and understanding, urging residents to join in celebrating this vital aspect of Ibadan’s cultural identity. The government has also encouraged citizens to follow instructions from community leaders to ensure the festival proceeds smoothly and respectfully, preserving one of the city’s most cherished traditions.
