The Acting Governor of Oyo State, Barrister Abdulraheem Bayo Lawal, has reaffirmed the state government’s dedication to advancing technical and vocational education as a key driver of economic growth. Speaking at the combined convocation ceremony of Adeseun Ogundoyin Polytechnic, Eruwa, which covered the 2021/2022, 2022/2023, and 2023/2024 academic sessions, Lawal emphasized that Governor Seyi Makinde’s administration recognizes the importance of holistic education that meets global standards.
Highlighting the role of information communication technology (ICT) and vocational skills, the Acting Governor assured continued government support for tertiary institutions through increased funding, infrastructure improvements, course accreditation, and the regularization of part-time staff. He urged graduating students to combine their academic achievements with strong character, integrity, and discipline to succeed in the labor market.
“To develop human capital, education, particularly higher education, is essential and irreversible,” Lawal said. “Oyo State allocates 20.88 percent of its budget to education — surpassing the UNESCO minimum standard of 20 percent.” He pledged to address institutional challenges such as the appointment of principal officers, infrastructural upgrades, and seamless accreditation processes to enhance the polytechnic’s offerings.
The Rector of Adeseun Ogundoyin Polytechnic, Dr. Olugbade Akinteye, expressed gratitude for the government’s consistent backing, noting the institution’s growth during the administration, including recent accreditations of new courses at the Higher National Diploma level. The Polytechnic was ranked the third-best in Nigeria by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board in 2024.
The convocation ceremony also honored Prince Adeyinka Afonja, Chairman of Ace Mall, for his long-standing support to the institution. The event was attended by top government officials, traditional rulers, and alumni, underscoring the collaborative effort to boost education in Oyo State.
This renewed commitment signifies Oyo State’s strategic focus on building skilled manpower that aligns with the evolving demands of the labor market and technological advancement.
