In a landmark development for nursing education, the Oyo State College of Nursing Sciences, Eleyele, Ibadan, has officially inaugurated four new faculties, a major step toward fulfilling the institution’s collegiate status. The former departments of Nursing, Midwifery, and Public Health have been elevated to standalone faculties: Medical Surgical; Maternal & Child Health; Public Health and Community Care; and Psychiatric and Mental Health.
Speaking at the inauguration, Provost Dr. Gbonjubola Owolabi hailed the restructuring as recognition of the college’s decades-long contributions to nursing education. “This framework ushers in a new era for the institution and the Nigerian nursing profession,” she said, urging faculty deans to strive for excellence and produce world-class nursing professionals. Dr. Owolabi also lauded the commitment of previous department heads, now faculty deans, whose leadership has been instrumental in the college’s progress.
A significant highlight of the event was the announcement of the college’s plans to commence degree-awarding programs through an academic affiliation with Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso. This collaboration will empower students to pursue bachelor’s and master’s degrees within the college, breaking new ground in nursing education pathways.
Prof. Ayodeji Omole, Pro-Chancellor of LAUTECH, described the inauguration as a historic milestone, filling a critical gap in Nigeria’s nursing education system. He praised the college’s bold restructuring as a turning point that promises enhanced nursing education and practice standards.
The college’s progress includes full accreditation from the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria for key programs and recent government approval of new academic staffing to support the expanded faculties. These developments align with Governor Seyi Makinde’s administration’s ongoing investment in education infrastructure and quality improvement across Oyo State.
As the Oyo State College of Nursing Sciences embraces these transformative changes, it stands poised to redefine nursing education in the region, preparing a skilled workforce ready to meet healthcare challenges locally and globally.
