Abia State Governor Dr. Alex Otti visited the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, at the Sokoto Correctional Centre on November 30, 2025. During the meeting, Otti urged Kanu to stay resilient, noting that efforts initiated over two years ago—known to Kanu—have gained momentum despite recent setbacks. He promised an administrative resolution leading to Kanu’s release, marking a significant push for regional stability.

Kanu, recently transferred to Sokoto after a Federal High Court in Abuja convicted him on terrorism charges and sentenced him to life imprisonment, appeared cheerful and grateful. He praised Otti’s governance in Abia, likening it to the late Sam Mbakwe’s legacy in old Imo State, and emphasized his focus on good governance and public welfare. The IPOB leader expressed no surprise at the visit, recalling Otti’s prior actions.

A highlight came when Otti shared that the Sultan of Sokoto supports Kanu’s release for tension reduction, even joking about “turbaning” him as a subject, which drew loud laughter from Kanu. Otti was joined by Abia Attorney General Ikechukwu Uwanna (SAN), media aide Ferdinand Ekeoma, Sokoto officials, and Kanu’s brother, Prince Emmanuel Kanu. This visit underscores Otti’s ongoing engagements, including prior optimism shared during federal visits.
