Opposition stakeholders under the G100 alliance are considering alternative arrangements for the 2027 presidential election as efforts to persuade former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar and former Anambra State governor Peter Obi to support a single candidate continue.
ValidViewNetwork reports that the latest development does not amount to an agreement on a runoff. Rather, sources within the alliance say the possibility is being considered as a contingency if opposition parties fail to settle on one presidential candidate.
ATIKU AND OBI
The G100 had initially advocated cooperation around a single presidential candidate.
Atiku is associated with the African Democratic Congress presidential ticket, while Obi is associated with the Nigeria Democratic Congress.
According to sources, neither has accepted the single-candidate proposal. One source said: “Both have not shown any kind of inclination or acceptance of the single candidacy at this time. But of course, there are other plans.”
RUNOFF DISCUSSION
Another source said the discussions could be useful if a second round becomes necessary. The source said the possibility of a runoff was part of contingency planning.
Nigeria’s Constitution provides for a second presidential election where the conditions for election of a President are not met in the first ballot. Section 134 sets out the constitutional requirements.
ValidViewNetwork reports that the G100 discussion is therefore about political strategy within the existing electoral framework, not a change to the Constitution itself.
NO ELECTION OUTCOME PREDICTED
The sources also referred to research and statistics suggesting that a first-round outcome might not produce a clear winner. Those are the sources’ assessments and should not be treated as an independent forecast of the 2027 election. The consultations involving Atiku, Obi and other opposition figures remain ongoing.
