By Anlugbua, Mogaji Ile Nla of Ibadan Land
The Yoruba traditional institution, once a sacred pillar of governance and spirituality, is now plagued by rivalry, ego, and historical distortion. The so-called supremacy tussle between the Ooni of Ife and the Alaafin of Oyo is a clear example of a conflict that is both manufactured and baseless. Authentic Yoruba history does not place one throne above the other. The narrative of superiority is a façade, promoted by those who profit from division.
Since the coronation of the new Alaafin, online platforms have been flooded with content from self-styled historians spreading falsehoods and stoking tension between these revered institutions. These individuals, often motivated by personal or political interests, are sowing seeds of discord in Yorubaland.
Let it be clear: neither the Ooni nor the Alaafin is superior. Each holds a unique and respected place in Yoruba heritage. Any claim to the contrary is false and dangerously divisive.
The problem runs deeper. The proliferation of traditional rulers—over 1,000 now claim the title of Oba—has diluted the essence of our sacred institutions. This has led to distorted history, politicized tradition, and the emergence of individuals who ascend thrones without legitimate lineage or merit.
Fueling this decline are sycophants and pseudo-historians who manipulate history for personal gain, sponsored by throne-seekers and promoted by loyalists who value spectacle over substance.
The sacredness of Yoruba kingship has been undermined. What was once a source of unity and guidance has become a stage for personal ambition and historical falsehoods.
The traditional institution is wounded. Unless we confront the lies, curb the proliferation of thrones, and elevate only those with legitimacy and wisdom, we risk further fracturing our land.
It is time for the Yoruba nation to reclaim the dignity of our heritage. Let us reject weaponized tradition and false narratives, and restore our institution to its rightful place—one of honor, truth, and unity. There is no superiority—only mutual respect, shared legacy, and an urgent need for unity.
