The peaceful residence at No. 2 Enyiuko Street, Fegge, Onitsha, became a scene of a grisly tragedy as an apprentice, Chiemerie Anieka, allegedly turned on his master’s family, leaving a prominent trader dead and his sister fighting for her life.
Ogechukwu Success Nwite, the surviving sister of the deceased trader, Mr. Ikechukwu Nwite, shared a harrowing account of the assault from her hospital bed. She recounted being jolted from sleep by a blunt force to her head.
”I was asleep when he hit me,” Ogechukwu told the Anambra Broadcasting Service (ABS). “Before I could even process what was happening, he struck a second time. As he aimed a third blow with a pistol, I managed to grab his hand, struggle free, and run outside to scream for help.”
It was only after escaping the immediate threat that she discovered the grim reality: her brother, Ikechukwu, was already lying unconscious in the kitchen after a similar brutal encounter. While Ogechukwu continues to receive medical treatment, family sources reveal a heartbreaking detail—she has been restricted from internet access and is yet to be informed that her brother did not survive the attack.
The motive remains a mystery to the family. Ogechukwu noted that Chiemerie had lived and worked with her brother for three years without significant incident. The only recent friction was a verbal reprimand her brother gave the apprentice for an undisclosed workplace error.
The suspect, Chiemerie Anieka, is currently in police custody. Authorities have confirmed that the case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Awka for a comprehensive investigation.
