The Ondo State Police Command has arrested three suspected kidnappers linked to the abduction of two staff members of Adekunle Ajasin University (AAUA), Akungba-Akoko. The victims were seized by gunmen on Monday, August 4, at their residence in Supare Akoko, Akoko South West Local Government Area. After nearly a week in captivity, the lecturers were released on Sunday, August 10, following the payment of an undisclosed ransom.
The police spokesperson, Deputy Superintendent Olushola Ayanlade, confirmed the arrest of the suspects, who were caught while allegedly sharing the ransom money. The suspects are currently undergoing profiling and interrogation. Commissioner of Police Adebowale Lawal has ordered that the suspects and all recovered exhibits be handed over to the Anti-Kidnapping Squad for thorough investigations.
One of the abducted staff, Omoniyi Eleyinmi, a faculty officer in the university’s Department of Education, was reportedly held hostage after a ransom initial demand of ₦100 million was negotiated down to ₦7 million, which was ultimately paid for his release. The kidnappers had reportedly contacted the family, allowed a brief communication with Eleyinmi, and demanded payment within 24 hours. The AAUA Alumni Association mobilized support for the ransom payment through public donations.
This incident adds to the rising insecurity in Ondo State, where kidnapping for ransom has become a troubling phenomenon. Earlier attempts to curb the menace are ongoing, but kidnappers continue to exact high-profile victims. The police assure the public that efforts to ensure the safety of residents and apprehend criminal elements will be intensified.
The community and the university remain hopeful that justice will be served and security restored following the arrests.
