AKURE, Nigeria – In a swift tactical operation, the Ondo State Police Command’s Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) unit has arrested a 35-year-old robbery suspect and recovered a stolen vehicle following a violent midnight attack in Akure.
The incident occurred at approximately 1:30 a.m. on Friday, January 16, 2026, when a four-man gang launched a brutal assault on residents of Eleyewo Quarters. The victims, identified as Olamiposi and Daniel Omoniyi, were reportedly ambushed by the gunmen who fired several shots to terrorize the neighborhood before snatching a Toyota Camry with Lagos registration number KRD 814 HX.

Tactical Response and Arrest
Acting on a distress call, SWAT operatives mobilized to the scene, coordinating with local youths to cordon off escape routes. The synergy between the police and the community led to the successful apprehension of one suspect, identified as Nurudeen, and the recovery of the stolen vehicle along with a cutlass used in the attack.
The victims, who sustained injuries during the encounter, were evacuated to a nearby hospital where they are currently receiving medical treatment.
”No Hiding Place for Criminals”
The Commissioner of Police, CP Adebowale Lawal, praised the professional conduct of the operatives and the bravery of the Eleyewo youths. Speaking through the Command’s spokesperson, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, the CP noted that Nurudeen has already confessed to the crime.
”This breakthrough is a testament to our renewed strategy of intelligence-led policing,” the CP stated. He further extended gratitude to the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, for providing the operational backing that has bolstered the command’s capacity to respond to high-priority threats.
This arrest follows a series of successes for the Ondo Command. Earlier today, CP Lawal revealed in a press briefing that the command arrested over 2,500 suspects in 2025, recovering 105 firearms as part of an aggressive crackdown on violent crime.
Efforts are currently underway to track down the three remaining members of the gang. The Police Command has urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities via their hotlines or social media platforms.
