The Governor of Ogun State, alongside his entourage, met with the Awujale Chiefs in Council in Iperu to discuss the appointment process of a new Awujale of Ijebuland. This follows the passing of the revered monarch, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, who died on July 13, 2025, after a distinguished reign of over 65 years. The meeting underscored the importance of avoiding a vacuum on the throne and directed the kingmakers to ensure a transparent, fair, and rancour-free selection process, providing equal opportunities for all qualified contestants. The Governor emphasized strict adherence to the customs, traditions, and laws that govern the Awujale stool.

The Awujale Chiefs in Council demonstrated unity and commitment during the deliberation, reinforcing confidence in their integrity. The Governor affirmed that the Ogun State government will fully support whichever candidate emerges from the council’s process. Together, they pledged to uphold peace, harmony, and progress across Ijebuland and Ogun State.

This consultation is critical, given the historical and cultural significance of the Awujale stool, which rotates among the four ruling houses of Ijebuland under established customs and laws.

The late Oba Adetona, who was from the Anikilaya ruling house, had held the throne since 1960. Following his passing, the turn to produce the next Awujale belongs to the Fusengbuwa ruling house, known to comprise the Jadiara, Fusengbuwa, Bubiade, and Tunwase families.

The Governor and the Chiefs reaffirmed the commitment to a peaceful succession, confident that the rightful traditions will guide the process for the benefit of the people and stability of the region. This event marks a significant moment in the history of Ijebuland, with leaders ensuring that the legacy of Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona continues through an orderly transition in line with the people’s customs and legal framework .
