Ogun Proposes ₦1.67trn ‘Sustainable Legacy’ Budget for 2026

Governor Dapo Abiodun has presented Ogun State’s 2026 budget, titled the “Budget of Sustainable Legacy,” with a proposed total expenditure of ₦1.668 trillion, marking a 63 percent increase from the 2025 budget of ₦1.054 trillion. Of this, ₦1.044 trillion is allocated to capital projects, while ₦624.76 billion is earmarked for recurrent expenditure. Key allocations prioritize infrastructure with ₦526.15 billion, education receiving ₦275.40 billion, and health getting ₦210.59 billion. The budget also dedicates funds to housing, social protection, agriculture, and other vital sectors, with a strong focus on job creation and revenue growth aligned with national development plans.

Funding for the budget is expected from internally generated revenue (IGR) of ₦509.88 billion, which includes ₦250 billion targeted from the Ogun State Internal Revenue Service, alongside ₦554.81 billion from federal allocations and ₦518.90 billion from capital receipts such as loans and grants. Abiodun noted that Ogun’s economy has grown substantially, with its GDP estimated at ₦17 trillion and IGR rising from ₦52 billion in 2020 to nearly ₦192 billion in 2024, with a target of ₦250 billion for 2025, reflecting a robust financial outlook.

Major ongoing projects include the fully certified Gateway International Airport, which has started commercial flights, serving as a catalyst for investment and job creation. The administration has also completed or rehabilitated over 1,500 kilometers of roads in six years and is developing inland dry ports to support exports and industrialization. The budget prioritizes completing projects under the ISEYA pillars — Infrastructure, Social Welfare, Education, Youth Empowerment, and Agriculture — aimed at sustainable growth and improved livelihoods.

The Speaker of the Ogun State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Oludaisi Elemide, praised the government’s consistent development pace, highlighting the passage of 11 bills and 56 resolutions in the past year that support governance, security, education, and infrastructure improvements. He also called for a special court to enforce anti-land grabbing laws and commended efforts to resolve disputes affecting communities to maintain peace and stability.

The Governor also announced important upcoming events, including the Gateway Afrobeat Drum Festival and the state’s 50th anniversary celebrations in 2026. He emphasized that this budget reflects a strategic step towards solidifying Ogun’s position as a leading economic hub in Nigeria, driven by infrastructural expansion, revenue enhancement, and social development with strong investor confidence ​.
