ABEOKUTA – What began as a domestic dispute over marital infidelity has culminated in a horrific tragedy that has left a young woman fighting for her life and a family of five shattered. Kehinde Wasiu, a 32-year-old housewife and mother of three, is currently in police custody following a calculated gasoline attack on her husband’s alleged mistress, Tosin Olaseinde.
The incident, which occurred in the heart of Ogun State, has sent shockwaves through the community, highlighting the devastating “collateral damage” of domestic betrayal.
The Attack
According to official reports from the Ogun State Police Command, Wasiu—driven by what she described during interrogation as a “breaking point”—tracked the 23-year-old victim to a specific location before dousing her in petrol and officiating a public execution-style attack.
Eyewitnesses described a scene of pure chaos as Olaseinde was engulfed in flames. While the victim survived the immediate assault, medical experts at the burn unit where she is being treated confirm she sustained third-degree burns over a significant portion of her body. Doctors warn that even with successful skin grafts, she faces a lifetime of permanent disfigurement and psychological trauma.
A Confession Rooted in Heartbreak
Under interrogation, the suspect did not deny the charges. Wasiu reportedly confessed to the crime, painting a bleak picture of a marriage eroded by neglect. She claimed her husband had redirected the family’s meager resources toward Olaseinde, leaving his three children in a state of want.
”I reached my breaking point,” Wasiu reportedly told investigators. “I watched my family suffer while he spent everything on her. My heart just snapped.”
Legal Implications and “Crimes of Passion”
As of March 2026, the Ogun State judiciary has signaled a “zero-tolerance” approach to such violence. Legal experts note that while the defense may argue “provocation” or a “crime of passion,” the premeditated nature of carrying petrol to the scene severely weakens that stance.
- If the victim survives: Wasiu faces a mandatory sentence of life imprisonment for attempted murder and grievous bodily harm.
- If the victim succumbs: The charge will be upgraded to murder, which remains a capital offense in Nigeria.
The Human Cost
Beyond the courtroom, the true victims are arguably the three children of the accused. Following their mother’s arrest and their father’s involvement in the scandal, the children have been placed in the care of distant relatives. Social workers have expressed concern over the long-term emotional impact on the minors, who have effectively lost both parents to this singular act of rage.
Local authorities continue to urge citizens to seek mediation through the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development or legal divorce proceedings rather than resorting to extrajudicial violence.
