Ogun Government Releases N6.7bn for Retiree Gratuities, Reaffirms Welfare Commitment

Abeokuta,Ogun State – The Ogun State government has underscored its unwavering dedication to the well-being of its retired public servants with the recent release of a substantial N6.7 billion to clear outstanding gratuities. This commitment was highlighted by Governor Dapo Abiodun during the opening of the 9th Quarterly General Meeting of the Association of Retired Heads of Service and Permanent Secretaries – South West, Nigeria (ARHOSPS-SWN), hosted in Abeokuta.

Represented by the Head of Service, Mr. Kehinde Onasanya, Governor Abiodun conveyed that this financial gesture demonstrates the government’s appreciation for the contributions of its senior citizens and its responsibility as a responsive administration. He emphasized that their roles in achieving the “Building Our Future Together” agenda are highly valued.

The Governor reiterated the administration’s pledge to maintain strong connections with former public service leaders, acknowledging their foundational role in shaping the standards of the civil service. “We shall continue to support the Association and maintain open lines of engagement to harness the wealth of experience within this distinguished body,” he affirmed.

In a proactive move to support workers transitioning into retirement, Governor Abiodun announced an initiative to train prospective retirees, particularly those in senior positions. This program aims to equip them for life after service, ensuring they remain valuable contributors to society and the progress of Ogun State.

Addressing the assembled retired heads of service and permanent secretaries from across the South West, the Governor urged them to reflect on the challenges and opportunities facing the public service in their respective states and the region. He encouraged them to utilize the platform to generate ideas and strategies for collaborative solutions that align with the aspirations of the people.

Dr. Ebenezer Okebukola, the Regional President of ARHOSPS-SWN, acknowledged the support provided by Governor Abiodun to the Ogun State chapter, ensuring a comfortable hosting of the quarterly meeting. He also highlighted various activities undertaken across the six South West states.

Chief Oluneye Okuboyejo, Chairman of the Governor’s Elder Consultative Council and the last surviving Permanent Secretary since the state’s creation, emphasized the importance of unity among the delegates to further the Association’s objectives.

The keynote address, delivered by retired Assistant Inspector General of Police and former Head of INTERPOL, Sikiru Lanre Bankole, focused on “The Elderly and the Challenge of Security in Nigeria.” He cautioned senior citizens against cybercrime and unrealistic investment schemes, advising them to be mindful of economic, physical, and financial challenges, avoid late-night travel, and guard against loneliness.

Earlier, the Host Chairman, Engr. Adeniyi Abiola, expressed Ogun State’s consistent active participation in the South West body and lauded Governor Abiodun’s unwavering support for the welfare of its members and the Association’s overall development.

At the conclusion of the meeting, a seven-member electoral committee was inaugurated to oversee the election of the next executive members. Delegates engaged in robust discussions, leading to the issuance of five resolutions addressing the welfare of members, regional development, and national progress.

Several delegates, including Otunba Nurudeen Ojora from Lagos and Mrs. Mojisola Ajayi from Ondo State, commended the Ogun State government for its infrastructure development and the prompt payment of pensions and gratuities to its retirees.
