A peaceful Monday morning in the Akiode Ibogun community of Ogun State turned into a nightmare of unimaginable proportions after a domestic dispute between a Celestial Church of Christ (CCC) shepherd, Evangelist Abidemi Odukoya, and his wife, Adenike, ended in the deaths of both partners within hours of each other.
Evangelist Odukoya, who served as the Shepherd-in-Charge of the CCC Iri Orun Parish (also known as the Dews of Heaven Parish), had a long history of marital friction that ultimately culminated in a fatal escalation on the morning of August 25.
According to community sources and eyewitness accounts, the latest confrontation broke out inside the couple’s residence around 3:00 AM. The verbal altercation rapidly degenerated into physical violence, during which Mrs. Odukoya sustained severe, life-threatening head injuries.
The couple’s young son reportedly bolted from his room into the chilly dawn, raising a frantic alarm that alerted immediate neighbors and members of the local Community Development Association (CDA). Adejimi Olawumi, a former CDA chairman in the area, recounted how residents rushed to the scene following cries for help, only to find Mrs. Odukoya lying unresponsive in a pool of blood.
Before emergency transport could be secured to move her to a medical facility, she succumbed to her injuries. The man of the house was nowhere to be found, having fled the premises upon realizing the severity of her condition.
A Second Grim Discovery on the Expressway
While community leaders and grieving relatives grappled with the sudden loss of Mrs. Odukoya—who was hurriedly interred at the family residence later that afternoon at around 2:00 PM—a second disaster was unfolding miles away.
At approximately 6:00 AM the same morning, emergency reports reached the community regarding an unidentified body discovered along the busy Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway around the Iyana Coker axis in Ifo. CDA officials dispatched to the scene positively identified the mangled remains as those of Evangelist Odukoya.
While official police confirmations are still pending, preliminary eyewitness testimonies from the highway alleged that the fleeing cleric deliberately stepped or ran into the path of an oncoming, fully loaded cement trailer in an apparent act of suicide.
Family Conflict and Police Investigations
Family members have since come forward to express profound shock, noting that the couple’s union had long been plagued by recurring bitter disputes. Relatives revealed that the marital strains had previously drawn interventions from extended family members and local police posts, though efforts to permanently reconcile the pair ultimately proved futile.
The Ogun State Police Command has launched a comprehensive investigation to uncover the precise sequence of events surrounding both fatalities. Deputy Police Public Relations Officer, Opeyemi Oluborode, confirmed that operatives have taken over the case.
The double tragedy has left church congregants and residents of Ibogun deeply shell-shocked, turning a local parish house into a monument of grief and shining a harsh spotlight on the critical need for early intervention in volatile domestic situations.
