ABEOKUTA — As the countdown to the 2027 general elections begins to influence the political climate in Ogun State, heavyweights of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the Ogun Central Senatorial District have held a high-stakes consultative meeting to reinforce party structures.
The gathering, held under the auspices of “Team Egba United,” took place at the Abeokuta private residence of the former Governor and iconic leader of the party, Chief Olusegun Osoba. The meeting is widely seen as a strategic move to ensure the Egba political bloc remains a cohesive force ahead of the upcoming electoral cycle.
A Show of Unity
The closed-door session featured a “who’s who” of Ogun Central politics, signaling a unified front amidst emerging internal dynamics. Leading the delegation of elected officials was Senator Shuaib Afolabi Salisu, along with House of Representatives members Hon. Afolabi Moruf Afuwape and Hon. Ibrahim Isiaka.
The meeting also saw a significant turnout from the grassroots and executive arms of the party, including:
- Chief Sunday Sowunmi, APC Ogun Central Senatorial District Chairman.
- Hon. (Dr.) Folasade Adeyemo, Chairperson of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) Ogun State Chapter, leading all local government chairmen from the district.
- Various State Commissioners and members of the APC State Executive Committee.
Strategy and Harmonization
While official resolutions were not released to the press, insiders describe the deliberations as “robust and frank.” Sources suggest the primary focus was on e-registration of members, grassroots mobilization, and “harmonizing perspectives” to prevent internal friction as the 2027 gubernatorial race begins to take shape.
The choice of Chief Osoba’s residence—a traditional “Mecca” for Egba progressive politics—underscores the party’s intent to rely on veteran leadership to navigate the complexities of succession and district interest.
The 2027 Factor
The emergence of “Team Egba United” comes at a time when various interest groups within the APC are intensifying their activities. By consolidating the Ogun Central front, stakeholders aim to ensure that the district remains a powerhouse in the party’s decision-making process, specifically regarding the delivery of democratic dividends and the future zoning of key offices.
