Abeokuta, Ogun State – Governor Dapo Abiodun has approved N16.5 million to support 33 sports associations in Ogun State as they prepare for the 22nd National Sports Festival, scheduled for May 16-30. Each association will receive N500,000 to aid in their training and preparation.

Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Tokunbo Talabi, announced the funding at a meeting with athletes, coaches, and sports stakeholders at the June 12 Cultural Centre. He emphasized that the funds are intended to ensure robust preparation for the festival and are not to be treated as a general distribution.
“The Governor has sanctioned the implementation of a new structure and process to drive the development of sports,” Talabi stated, highlighting the government’s commitment to improving the state’s sporting infrastructure and performance. He further explained that a mechanism will be established to monitor the impact of the subvention on athlete preparation, ensuring accountability and sustainability.
Talabi also encouraged athletes to create unique team chants and celebrations, fostering a strong sense of unity and identity during competitions. He stressed the importance of constructive criticism while cautioning against sensationalism that hinders development.
Commissioner for Sports Development, Wasiu Isiaka, announced that the state’s own sports festival will precede the national event, taking place in the last week of April. Twneighbouringng states will be invited to participate, enhancing the competitive atmosphere. He added that outstanding associations, in addition to individual athletes, will be rewarded for their performance at the National Sports Festival.
Isiaka urged sports association leaders to collaborate and share ideas, ensuring a successful and impactful participation in the upcoming festival, positioning Ogun State as a leading force in Nigerian sports. The state’s investment in new sports facilities, he noted, underscores its commitment to achieving this goal.
