The Nigerian Meteorological Agency, NiMet, has warned residents in Lagos, the Federal Capital Territory and 20 other states to prepare for possible flash flooding as rainfall continues into October.
The warning places particular emphasis on areas vulnerable to sudden flooding following intense rainfall.
NiMet’s flood warnings come against a backdrop of repeated flooding incidents recorded in different parts of Nigeria during the 2026 rainy season.
The agency has previously warned that intense rainfall can trigger flash flooding, riverine flooding, soil erosion, strong winds, thunderstorms and related hazards in vulnerable locations.
Residents in flood-prone communities are expected to monitor weather updates, avoid crossing fast-flowing floodwater and keep drainage channels around homes and businesses clear.
The warning is also relevant to motorists, pedestrians, emergency agencies and local authorities, particularly in areas where blocked drainage systems or poor road conditions can worsen the effect of heavy rainfall.
Lagos has faced repeated flooding concerns during the current rainy season, while the state government has continued to point to drainage works, pump stations, flood-abatement operations and other interventions.
The latest warning therefore comes as authorities continue to manage the combined effects of rainfall, urban development, drainage limitations and changing weather patterns.
ValidViewNetwork reports that the exact locations and intensity of rainfall can change with subsequent weather updates, making it important for residents to follow NiMet’s latest forecasts rather than treat the warning as a prediction that every listed area will necessarily flood.
