Nigeria’s former President, Olusegun Obasanjo, emphasizes that aging is an inevitable natural process that cannot be reversed by medication but can be managed gracefully. He advises elderly individuals to adopt a balanced lifestyle, including a healthy diet, adequate rest, regular medical checkups, mental exercises, good social interactions, and regular physical activity.

In a lecture at the Elders’ Forum Meeting of the Chief Tony Anenih Geriatric Centre, University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, Chief Obasanjo noted that aging does not necessarily mean losing one’s vitality. He encouraged seniors not to fear death but instead prepare for old age by saving, planning a safe living environment, and embracing cultural changes.
Obasanjo highlighted the importance of a well-planned diet, emphasizing that food can be harmful if not consumed properly. He recommended daily intake of fruits and vegetables and stressed the need for bi-annual medical checkups to detect and manage diseases early. He shared his personal experience with diabetes, emphasizing that while it cannot be cured, it can be managed effectively.
Furthermore, Obasanjo advised seniors to maintain a healthy weight, engage in brain-stimulating activities, and foster good social connections without stress. He also suggested using medicinal herbs like bitter kola and kola nut after consulting with doctors. His immunity-boosting herbal concoction includes neem, pawpaw leaf, lime, ginger, garlic, and turmeric, which he boils and stores for later use.
The Chief Medical Director of UCH, Professor Jesse Otegbayo, commended Chief Obasanjo as the ideal person to share tips on aging gracefully, given his physical and mental well-being. The event aimed to inspire seniors to lead healthier lives.
