Former President Chief Olusegun Obasanjo has warmly congratulated Oba Abdul-Rasheed Adewolu Ladoja on his formal ascension as the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland, the historic capital of Oyo State. The coronation ceremony, marking this grand occasion, is set to take place on Friday, September 26, 2025, at the iconic Mapo Hall in Ibadan.
In a statement delivered through his Special Assistant on Media, Kehinde Akinyemi, and issued from New York where he is attending the 80th United Nations General Assembly, Obasanjo offered a traditional Yoruba royal salutation to the new monarch: “Ade a pe lori, bata a pe lese,” meaning “May your crown last long on your head and your shoes on your feet.” He described the coronation ceremony as a mere formality, emphasizing that Ladoja had already assumed the revered position.
Obasanjo highlighted the exalted and responsible nature of the Olubadan throne, noting that it demands humility, patience, divine wisdom, tolerance, and counsel from diverse quarters for success. Importantly, he urged Oba Ladoja to clearly distinguish the role of traditional rulership from political office, stressing that the two should neither compete nor conflict.
“The position of traditional ruler encompasses deep cultural and spiritual responsibilities that require a leader to rise above partisan politics,” Obasanjo observed. “Traditional rulership does not compete or conflict with political rulership. I wish you all the best and the grace, guidance, and direction of Almighty God,” he concluded.
Oba Rashidi Ladoja, a former governor of Oyo State, was unanimously endorsed by kingmakers as the successor to the late 43rd Olubadan, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, who passed away in July 2025. As the Otun Olubadan—the highest-ranking chief in the civil line—Ladoja stood first in line for the throne under Ibadan’s unique rotational system of traditional leadership.
The coronation festivities are expected to draw prominent dignitaries, including President Bola Tinubu, Yoruba monarchs, political leaders, and thousands of citizens celebrating the rich cultural heritage of Ibadan.
The event will not only signify the continuity of one of Nigeria’s most prominent traditional thrones but also underscore the importance of unity, wisdom, and the preservation of customs in the modern era.
Markets across Ibadan have been scheduled to close on the day to honor the occasion, reflecting the deep respect for the Olubadan institution within the community.
In essence, Obasanjo’s message is a call for wise stewardship and a reminder that while politics and tradition both play critical roles in the leadership landscape, they must be handled distinctly to foster harmony and progress in Ibadanland.
This moment is historic and significant for the people of Ibadan and the broader Yoruba nation as they welcome Olubadan Ladoja to this distinguished and respected role.
