Residents of Obada Oko Community in Ewekoro Local Government Area, Ogun State, staged a peaceful protest on Saturday to decry persistent power outages and alleged neglect by the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC). The densely populated Ibukun Oluwa Community, comprising various Community Development Associations (CDAs), lamented that the prolonged blackout has crippled businesses and made life unbearable for households.
Protesters carried placards with inscriptions such as “Our Light Is Being Diverted, IBEDC Have Ruined Our Wives’ Businesses” and “Stop Cheating Us, Enough of Injustice.” They accused IBEDC of diverting electricity meant for their community to private companies and ignoring numerous letters sent over the years.
Mr. Anthony Olasukanmi, CDH Chairman for Obada Oko, highlighted the community’s efforts to resolve the issue, including writing to IBEDC, police officers, DSS officials, and IBEDC’s Ibadan office—all to no avail. He expressed frustration over how the blackout has disrupted businesses and daily activities, particularly for women and tenants who rely on electricity.
The residents called for immediate action from IBEDC to restore fair electricity distribution and alleviate their plight.
